Maldives (on a budget)

What an incredible trip we had. We will be back. Someday...

Finally, a dream came true! Everyone knows the Maldives for the snow-white sandy beaches, the turquoise blue Indian Ocean and the beautiful underwater world. After arriving in the capital Male, most tourists go directly by speedboat or seaplane to the luxury resort they have booked. But the country has much more to offer than just a 'bounty holiday'. We visited the Maldives at the end of April 2023, and discovered both the local culture of the country and a holiday resort on a tourist island. So a bit 'on a budget' but also a bit 'deluxe'!

Backpacking in the Maldives: *TIPS*

Backpacking in the Maldives offers a unique experience beyond the luxury resorts. Here are some tips for an adventurous trip:
# 1. Budget Accommodation
- Look for guesthouses and hostels on local islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, or Gulhi. They offer affordable rates and a chance to experience local culture.
# 2. Transportation
- Use public ferries to travel between islands, as they are cost-effective. Speedboats and seaplanes are quicker but more expensive.
# 3. Activities
- Snorkeling and diving: Explore coral reefs and marine life. Very affordable on the local islands.
- Local tours: Join fishing trips or island hopping tours.
- Cultural experiences: Visit local markets and attend traditional events.
# 4. Food
- Try local cuisine at small eateries. Dishes often feature fresh fish, coconut, and rice.
# 5. Respect Local Customs
- Dress modestly on local islands. Swimwear is acceptable only at designated beaches.
