On to our first destination

After a flight of 3 hours and 20 minutes, we landed in Chania. We rented a car at the airport for 2 weeks. We still had a road trip ahead of us, because it was a 2-and-a-half-hour drive to our first destination, Villa Stella in Stalida

We enjoyed the route along the coast, the picturesque villages and breathtaking shores.

Panormes

Along the way to our first destination, we stopped for a lunch in the village of Panormes, a pretty village with winding streets full of whitewashed buildings, vibrant flowers flowing from the balconies and quaint tavernas serving mouthwatering local delicacies.

Our first taste of a perfect slice of Greek island life. We immerse ourselves in the warm hospitality of the locals, enjoy traditional dishes packed with flavor and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that makes Crete so irresistible.

Stalida & Beach life

Our first days in Stalida we just relaxed on the beach and by the pool, enjoying lunches and dinners in the village. We strolled through the streets with all those lovely stalls selling nice jewelry and other souvenirs. We took the car to some other sun-drenched beaches in the area, such as Malia and Potamos Beach. The sea is crystal clear and the beaches are all paradise.

Knossos Palace

This palace was half an hour's drive from our apartment. We must say, that no visit to Crete would be complete without taking a step back in time to explore the ancient wonders of Knossos Palace and the Minoan civilization. The Minoans built enormous labyrinthine palaces, and as we wander through the labyrinthine ruins, we are transported to a bygone era of Minoan civilization. From the grandeur of the Throne Room to the terrifying beauty of the Queen's Megaron, every corner of Knossos Palace tells a story about a civilization that shaped the course of history. As we marvel at the architectural wonders and intricate frescoes, we can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the ingenuity of the ancient Minoans. Next to this beautiful palace site are a number of remains of palaces from the time of the Minoan civilization, such as the site at Phaistos and Zakros.

Acqua Plus waterpark

This thrilling water park was only a fifteen-minute drive from our apartment, where we enjoyed a full day of slides twisting and turning through the azure skies and pools sparkling under the Mediterranean sun. From heart-pounding rides to lazy rivers perfect for relaxation, there was something for everyone to enjoy. We really had a blast.

Second destination

After a full week at Villa Stella in Stalida it was time to 'move' to our second destination on the island: Iliopetra Houses and Studios in Douliana. This place was a bit more remote in the mountains. The studio was located in a beautiful country house with several fruit trees on the property. There was also a lovely swimming pool.

Arkadi Monastery

Along the way, we visited the historic Arkadi Monastery, located amid the rugged beauty of the Rethymnon region. Steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, Arkadi Monastery is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Cretan people.

We explore the ancient monastery, with its ornate architecture and fascinating exhibits, and learn about its role in the struggle for Crete's independence.

Road-trip west coast

We also explored the west side of Crete and drove to Elafonisi Beach, a little paradise with its powdery pink sand and crystal-clear sea. From this beach you can see the island of the same name: Elafonisi.

From here, we continued to Falasarna beach, a vast beach in a hilly area.

Finally, we drove to Balos Lagoon, a beautiful bay lagoon, with turquoise water and a white sandy beach. Absolutely georgious.

Chania

This picturesque town, a half-hour drive from our apartment, has a fascinating old Venetian harbor to which you can easily walk via labyrinthine streets, decorated with colorful bougainvillea. The mosaic city center has a mix of Venetian and Ottoman heritage that is reflected in the architecture, small churches, merchant houses and an imposing cathedral. We had dinner in the harbor for a number of evenings and enjoyed all the commotion around us, including merchants at our table who wanted to sell us souvenirs for a lot of money.

Until we meet again..!

Our trip through Crete had come to an end. We had enjoyed two wonderful weeks, from the thrill of the water park to the tranquility of the beaches, from ancient ruins to the charming villages: Crete has captured our hearts!
