Girona; what a beauty
Girona or Gerona is a captivating city with a rich history and stunning architecture. 'Girona' is de Catalan name and 'Gerona' is the Spanish version of the name. There is a regional airport on the outskirts of the city, making this destination easily accessible.
Girona is also called 'little Barcelona' because of the similarities, only a 'size smaller'.
Travel itinerary
We stayed at Hotel Historic, which was a good base for exploring the city. We covered all on foot in Girona. The city is easy to walk around; you can wander through the narrow streets and always end up at one of the many squares and small squares. ‘Plaça de la Independència’ is probably the most known plaça in Girona; it is a lively square filled with cafes and restaurants and a great spot to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere. This also applies to the other squares in Girona.
Medieval City center Barri Vell
We started our journey in Barri Vell, the Old Town of Girona, a captivating area steeped in history and character. The area is rich in cultural offerings, with various art galleries, shops, and restaurants showcasing local cuisine and crafts. The blend of history and modern life creates a vibrant, dynamic environment.
Barri Vell encapsulates the essence of Girona, combining historical significance with a lively community, making it a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Most of the highlights we have described below are located in this area.
Girona Cathedral
Our first stop: the Girona Cathedral. This impressive cathedral features a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The construction of the Cathedral began in the 11th century, specifically in 1020, and it was completed in the 18th century. The building has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, with significant work being done in the Gothic style during the 14th and 15th centuries. Its grand staircase and the wide nave (the widest in the world) are must-sees. The views from the top are spectacular.
Convent of Sant Domènec
Time for a drink and we ended up at 'The Convent of Sant Domènec', which is a significant historical and architectural site in the heart of the Old Town (Barri Vell).
Today, it's home to the Girona Art Museum, showcasing a collection of Catalan art and historical artifacts. The Convent is a beautiful and serene escape from the bustling streets, especially the plaça in front of the stairs, where you can sit in the shade of the trees (Plaça de Sant Domènec).
So we did!
Muralles de Girona - ancient City Walls
We continued our city trip to the 'Muralles de Girona'. These ancient walls offer a beautiful walking path with panoramic views of the city. Walking along the walls is a fantastic way to experience Girona’s history and beauty. Definitely, a 'Must-Do' when you are in Girona. We were truly blown away when we saw this well-maintained heritage.
