Getaway to Texel

'The island of the sheep', is Texel's nickname.

If you want to taste and experience the real Dutch atmosphere and landscape, then you should really go to Texel. This idyllic island of Texel is unique and compact, ideal for a long weekend away. Texel is the largest Wadden island in the Netherlands with by far the most tourist visitors.

We visited Texel from July 29 to August 1 in 2021.  You can only get there by ferry from Den Helder in North Holland and we took our car on the ferry. It is a unique part of the Netherlands and a popular holiday destination all year round. In the summer you can have a wonderful beach holiday, and in the other seasons you can enjoy fantastic walking and cycling.

Here is our itinerary

We took the ferry in Den Helder; in high season it is better to make a reservation, but this ferry sails almost every half hour, so there is always a spot, especially if you don't bring a car. A return ticket for the ferry is 39 euro (and 26 euros on off-peak days).

We booked this hotel: Hotel Bilderberg

During our stay we visited various sights: Ecomare, Nationaal Park Duinen of Texel, the lighthouse and Cocksdorp.

Ecomare

Ecomare is the center for the Wadden Sea and the North Sea on the North Holland Wadden Island of Texel. It combines seal and bird sanctuary with a nature museum and public aquarium. Some seals are permanently housed there. Due to the versatility of the center, visitors to Ecomare get a comprehensive picture of the nature of the Wadden Sea and the North Sea.
